Mount Washington Hillclimb August 20; Gorham, New Hampshire When asked how to train for the Mount Washington Hillclimb, a 7.6-mile bike race up the Northeast’s highest peak, past participants unanimously offer the same advice: “Find the steepest hill you’ve ever ridden and ride it over and over again.” While the New Hampshire peak’s 6,288-foot elevation isn’t too impressive by Rocky Mountain standards, the mountain’s record for horrendous weather—the highest sustained winds ever recorded in the world—and sheer elevation gain (4,727 feet in 7.6 miles) make it the toughest bicycle hillclimb in North America. Riders regularly chalk up times well over the 90-minute mark for the ascent. But the prospect of riding at a snail’s pace into 50 mph headwinds keeps the 600-rider field from filling up months before New England’s singular bicycle experience. 603-447-6991; www.tinmtn.org.
