Lefty Kreh's pro fishing resume is longer than the wine list at the Waldorf-Astoria: He was awarded the American Sportfishing Association's "Lifetime Achievement Award" and the "Lifetime Contribution Award" by the North American Fly Tackle Trade Association—and he's in three fishing halls of fame. Lefty ties his own flies, but you can find any one of these standbys at your local fly shop or www.cabelas.com.
"When fishing saltwater there are several effective flies, but my favorite is the Lefty's Deceiver." That makes sense. Lefty's Deceiver was designed by Lefty himself about 40 years ago, and it's now one of the most famous flies in the world for saltwater. About eight years ago, it appeared on a postage stamp as part of a series of popular flies.
"When fishing freshwater, I would never be without an Adams. If you have fish on top that are feeding on dry flies, the one fly that seems to do better than the others is the Adams. You want to float it on the surface." Lefty suggests stocking a range of sizes between 12 and 20.
Hare's Ear Nymph. "This is fished underwater. It's an imitation of a number of different nymphs. It's more of an imitative pattern than a realistic pattern." Again a size range of 12 to 20 is important.
"If you’ve got trout that are feeding on minnows or crayfish or helgamites, the Woolly Bugger is probably going to do the job great. It looks like something buggy and that looks good to eat to a trout." Size range: 4 to 10.
Egg Pattern. “Imitates fish eggs—which all fish like to eat. Cast it out and let it sink slowly.”
