Fishing for Stripers

Primarily a saltwater fish, striped bass (stripers, rockfish) are amazingly strong fish that can also be found in some freshwater reservoirs and streams.
Where to Look
Look for boiling, frothing feeding frenzies: areas where a school of stripers have pushed a school of actively feeding baitfish to the top.
Diving and wheeling gulls are good indicators of striper jumps.
Action is usually short-lived in these areas, so don’t waste anytime getting there.
Try a large topwater plug, stripping a clouser minnow or a spoon through the feeding action.
If fishing structure, try surface baits during low light; bucktail jig or jigging spoons later in the day.
If fly fishing for stripers, look below shoals, in rips and in other feeding stations where the bottom changes. Besides the clouser, use large streamers that imitate local baitfish patterns.
Stripers have sharp spines and razor-like gill plates, so if you value your fingers and your equipment, take great care in handling them.
