It is, without doubt, one of the more remarkable landscapes in all of Canada. Gros Morne National Park, on the western shores of Newfoundland, the nation’s easternmost province, is a hiker’s Shangri-La. The trails lead out from quaint coastal villages, climbing far up into deep, cliff-sided fjords and lush moorlands that flank the island’s mountainous spine. In the spirit of true wilderness, caribou, moose, bear and hundreds of species of birds make their home in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. True adventurers should consider the four-day Long Range and North Rim traverse, which climbs up from the edge of an ocean fjord onto Gros Morne Mountain and then onto the Long Traverse Range, where the trail flirts with the north rim of Western Brook Pond, a landlocked fjord flanked by waterfalls and thousand-foot cliffs. This is backcountry camping at its finest. 709-458-2417; www.parkcanada.gc.ca.

The Price Tag: Hiking is free, but there’s a $5.75 park entrance fee.
