Bargain: Channel Islands National Park

By Lin Alder
Believe it or not, one of the nation’s least visited national parks is just one-and-a-half hours northwest of the Los Angeles megalopolis. Comprised of five small islands adrift in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ventura, California, Channel Islands National Park boasts isolated beaches, towering rock arches and picturesque coves where you’ll find countless sea birds, elephant seals and sea lions. The Islands’ endless kelp beds are also known for world-class snorkeling and diving.

Visitors can explore the park by foot or sea kayak, and camping is allowed in primitive sites on all of the islands. But you have to reserve your spot in advance: The Park Service is stingy with permits—a fact you’ll appreciate as you relish the solitude that’s rarely found in more Disney-esque national parks.

The Price Tag: Roundtrip passage by boat is $50. Camping permits run $10 per day. 805-658-5711; www.nps.gov/chis.
