Head to Hueco Tanks State Historic Site and sign up for a free pictograph, bouldering and hiking tour (offered yearlong). Here’s a chance to test your crimping and smearing skills in a setting where the funky rock has become a thing of modern legend and the ancient rock art gives a glimpse into the stories of the past. The tours run every Wednesday through Sunday at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. and last a minimum of two hours. But before you jet to El Paso, Texas for this screamin’ deal (the site is 32 miles northeast of the city), call ahead. The tours are run by volunteers and occasionally aren’t available. Plus, only 10 people are allowed on each tour.
The Price Tag: Entrance to Hueco Tanks is $4 per person. 915-857-1135; www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/hueco/hueco.htm.
