The skiing at Mad River Glen is beyond legendary, but the meditative highpoint of a day here is often the 12-minute ride solo up the famed diesel-powered single chair. Watch hot skiers preen on the bumps of Chute below as you ponder the mysteries of ski bum psychology. The only single chair still running in the US started ferrying skiers up General Stark Mountain on December 11, 1948, and the cooperative-owned area will probably let snowboarders on the mountain before they pull it down. Don’t expect either to happen anytime soon. 802-496-3551; www.madriverglen.com.
