Name: HannaLaura Achenbach
Position: The grand dame of Canadian
hut and heli skiing cuisine
Contact: Canadian Mountain Holidays,
800-661-0252; www.cmhski.com.

Equal parts loving grandmother and drill sergeant, HannaLaura Achenbach traveled from Berlin to the New World in 1957 and soon embarked on a storied career re-fueling hungry skiers and hut-tourers across Alberta and British Columbia.
“About a year after I arrived, I got an offer to cook at the Assiniboine Lodge from Lizzy Rummel, an expatriate German baroness. We flew in a little piper to the landing site at Lake Magog. Even though I was a city girl, when I saw that little cabin, the little wood-burning stove and the big, snowy mountains, I was taken. I was HOOKED™,” she reminisces.
It was at Assiniboine Lodge she met Hans Gmoser, a young Austrian mountain guide who would go on to found the heli-skiing industry with the creation of Canadian Mountain Holidays. In 1967, she became the first cook at his Bugaboo Lodge.
Though now mostly retired, HannaLaura still occasionally cooks at the Battle Abbey Hut and for private trips. And when the time comes to sign up for a week of skiing, those in the know will not be asking what weeks are bound to have the best powder, but rather when HannaLaura is going to be in the kitchen.
